Citizens are attacking & killing cops in South Florida
Lt. Greg Lees was supervising his Broward County Sheriff’s SWAT squad as they practiced hostage-rescue drills in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., on Thursday morning when the call came in. “Had he heard the news?” asked a tactical officer from nearby Palm Beach County. Four Miami-Dade County police officers had been shot and one was likely dead. An AK-47-wielding gunman had unleashed a fusillade of bullets on officers after they stopped his car, striking and killing 37-year-old Miami-Dade officer Jose Somohano. Then, less than 15 minutes later, a second call came in, this time from Lees’s command post. “They were requesting assistance,” Lees recalled in an interview with NEWSWEEK. He was filled with “dread, the bad feeling, the knot in your stomach, the ‘Oh Christ, not again’ thing’.”
Cops in South Florida may be feeling besieged. Just last month, a Broward County sheriff’s deputy was shot and critically injured by a man he pulled over in a traffic stop. Then, days later, another Broward deputy was murdered late at night in a Walgreen’s parking lot by someone who fled in a vehicle and remains on the loose. And now this. “We’ve just been really beat up down here,” said Lees. » Article here
