A man died on his bicycle Saturday night when he tried to beat a train to a railroad crossing and was rammed by the locomotive.
Guy Merkle, 39, was ridding his green Mongoose bicycle south on a highway toward the railroad crossing. Witnesses told investigators that the man began peddling furiously as he approached the tracks, trying to beat an oncoming Florida East Coast Railways engine.
Witnesses said the gates at the crossing were down with lights flashing, and the train repeatedly blew its horn. The man continued to peddle. The engine hit him at 7:11 p.m. and sent his body flying 108 feet.
Hmmm… wouldn’t you be able to tell at some point, that there is no way you could beat this train? I mean, why wouldn’t you just turn the bicycle sideways right before you crossed the track and jump off!?! Maybe its one of those you had to be there to know what exactly happened things… whatever.
