12-year-old records two hole-in-ones!

A South Carolina youngster recorded two holes-in-one while competing in the 11-12 age group at the Future Masters.

Blake Hadden, a 12-year-old from North Augusta, S.C., aced the 83-yard No. 5 hole in Tuesday's final round at the Dothan Country Club with a 6-iron. He also had a hole-in-one with a 140-yard shot on No. 11 in Sunday's opening round, using a 4-iron.

"It's something I would have never dreamed of," Blake said. "I think it was probably a one-time only deal."

It is believed to be the first time a competitor has hit two hole-in-ones at the Future Masters, The Dothan Eagle reported Wednesday. Blake had never hit one before the 54-hole tournament, an event held at Dothan for junior golfs.

Blake's feat helped make up for his disappointing finish, tied for 34th in his age group. "I didn't really play that well," he said. "But I wont ever forget this." Article here.

Americans like to eat fries & burgers

NPD Group research firm looked at 30 years of data on what Americans eat... "Every day, since 1976, we have asked 3,500 people if they have gone to a restaurant and what they ordered," Balzer said. The most common thing women order? French fries.

No kidding. Women order fries more often than any other food. Here's another surprise: The second-most-ordered food by women is burgers, followed by pizza. A main-dish salad comes in seventh.

For men, the most-ordered item is burgers, followed by french fries and pizza. A main-dish salad is No. 10.

Still, Balzer says there are some differences in eating choices. "Men want to eat the same thing over and over, but women will try new things. They're more experimental. They like all those breads that men can't pronounce, like ciabatta and focaccia." (cha-BATT-uh and fo-KAH-chuh)

Balzer says it's not surprising that some of the fast-food chains are promoting double and triple burgers in ads aimed at men. "Men figure if one is good, two's a lot better. It's why we have razors with five blades." Article here.

...mails his severed finger to ex-girlfriend?

A woman received a severed human finger in the mail along with a threatening letter from her ex-boyfriend that said, "This is my last chance to touch you," police said.

Corpus Christi Police Capt. John Houston said police were not sure which finger was removed or how but that it appeared to have been washed before it was mailed Friday.

The 32-year-old woman filed for an emergency protective order from her boyfriend last week.

Police didn't release the name of the 34-year-old ex-boyfriend, who has not been found. He has moved to Spring Texas, but police there could not confirm the status of the search for him.

The man faces Class A misdemeanor charges from that incident and additional charges because of the threatening nature of the letter. Article here.

Air conditioning & no sleep makes you fat?

Obesity is just as likely to be caused by lack of sleep and too much air-conditioning as it is by a sedentary lifestyle and aggressive marketing by the food industry, according to a research article that challenges the conventional wisdom.

David Allison, an obesity researcher at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, US, and colleagues have published a paper questioning the importance of what they call the "Big Two" obesity factors: overeating as a result of junk food marketing and lack of exercise.

The researchers drew up a list of 10 factors that might have as much or more to do with increasing waistlines as the Big Two. For instance, they point out that studies show that people who do not get enough sleep have increased appetites. Notably the amount of sleep an average US adult gets has decreased from nine hours to seven hours in the last several decades.

Heating and air conditioning might also be to blame. When people and animals go above or below a "thermoneutral" ambient temperature, they lose weight - if it is too cold they burn fat to stay warm, and if too hot their appetites decrease. But studies show that people are keeping their houses warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer than they did a few decades ago, so these natural influences on weight are negated.

Other possibilities include the decrease in the number of people who smoke - which suppresses appetite - environmental endocrine disruptors, an ageing population, and an increase in babies born to older women - which are more likely to be obese. Another possibility is that overweight people are more likely to marry one another and give birth to children genetically predisposed to be overweight themselves. Article here.

Woman steals $1.5 million, shops like crazy

A woman accused of embezzling more than $1.5 million from a credit union and buying more than 1,500 items including hundreds of pairs of shoes, handbags, a $60,000 swimming pool and gambling trips to Las Vegas was sentenced Tuesday to 27 months in prison.

Betty Jean Barachie, of Kunkletown, bought 58 coats, 16 chain saws, a $25,000 John Deere tractor and more than 3,000 books, piling most of the items in her home with the tags still attached, said Dr. George Perovich, an Allentown psychologist. "She was a compulsive shopper and was one of the most extreme cases I'd ever seen," he said.

Barachie acknowledged stealing money from the Northampton-Carbon County Federal Credit Union, where she worked, from 1995 to 2003. She pleaded guilty in October to charges of embezzlement and filing a false federal tax return. Article here.
